Massie Hills Property
The trail runs through a mix of highland and lowland forest and a couple of mature pine plantations in this Grey County Forest property. There is even an old homestead on the trail marked by rusty farm implements poking through the grass. The Owen Sound Cross-Country Ski Club maintains the ski trails in the winter and they are groomed regularly.
Bognor Marsh Management Area Trails
A dirt road, boardwalks, pasture trails and Escarpment hikes make up the varied trails of Bognor Marsh. Interpretive plaques along the boardwalk to a lookout tower enhance the educational value of this quiet hike. Then follow the old switchback road to the top of the Niagara Escarpment and watch the turkey vultures as they soar along the cliff edge (note this is a Bruce Trail Sidetrail and is marked with blue blazes).
Trout Hollow Trail
The Trout Hollow Trail is a walking trail that travels through mostly private property along both sides of the Bighead River from the Bakeshop Bridge in Meaford to the Riverside Community Centre on the 7th Line. While following the trail along the river, access to Beautiful Joe Park and many historical and natural points of interest can be discovered including areas where old sawmills, gristmills and a power dam used to service early settlers. Noted U.S. naturalist, John Muir, worked with the Trout family at their sawmill in a hollow on the Bighead River in the 1860s.
Tom Thomson Trail
The Tom Thomson Trail is a new trail being developed between Owen Sound and Meaford, by a volunteer group relying on cash and in-kind donations. The trail is known as the missing link in the Bruce Grey Trails Master Plan, since there is not an abandoned rail bed to follow. The trail will travel through fields, wooded areas and quiet country roads. It will eventually connect the many trails, which meet in Owen Sound with the well-used and popular Georgian Trail, which begins in Meaford and continues to Collingwood.
Beautiful Joe Park
A charming and popular municipally operated Conservation area is located on the banks of the Big Head River in Meaford. The Park was opened in 1963, and commemorates Beautiful Joe, a dog that was rescued from the hands of a brutal master (a local milkman). Point Clark Lighthouse
The Point Clark Lighthouse was built between 1855 and 1859 to warn sailors of the shoal about three kilometers offshore. Its elegant proportions and limestone exterior are typical of the six imperial towers built in the region, a lighthouse style rarely seen elsewhere in Canada. The 110-foot stone tower is topped by a 12-sided lantern framed in cast iron, with a domed roof. A bronze lion head at each angle of the eaves directs rainwater away from the tower. The light stands 87 feet from the base of the tower. Although acquired by Parks Canada in 1967 to commemorate the vital role of lighthouses in navigation on the Great Lakes, it still serves its primary function - an aid to navigation. The lightkeepers dwelling, built at the same time as the lighthouse, is now operated as a museum by the Township of Huron-Kinloss. Admission and tours are available for a nominal fee.
